Some call it Gumption.

Many of my deep musings are caused my lectures from writing class. This may sound odd, but I suppose that is just how my brain works. Last night the topic was mostly preconceptions that hold us back from writing. One that stood out to me is that the misconception that you must have talent to write. My proffesor told us that she taught PH.D students for years, and they only had about a 25% graduation rate, and that they were all very talented. What set the 25% apart from the 75%? Peserverance. Without perserverance and drive, you have nothing. I started thinking about that. If you have talent, but no will to learn how to use your talent, you have nothing. However, if you have little or no talent, and you are determined to learn a skill, and never give up, you have a great deal. Then I started thinking about how only two students that I know of from my studio have gone on to have a dance career. What set them apart? Drive. Will. Perserverance. Gumption. Then I thought about all the girls who dropped out before their full potential blossomed (me being one of them). We lost the drive. Then I started thinking about writer's block. I suppose that will and drive is the only way to break it. To just sit down and start writing about your writer's block until you write it out of existence. So there you have it. Another very deep life tip from the mind and fingers of Bethany.
